How a Solar Lease Works in Maryland
Pay Less Than Your Utility. No System to Manage.
A solar lease means a trusted third-party owner finances and owns the system on your roof. You pay them a fixed monthly amount for the use of the system, less than what you’d pay your utility for the same electricity. Anything your panels don’t cover gets billed by your utility at standard rates. The combined cost is lower than utility alone. That’s the whole pitch, and it works because the system owner can claim federal tax credits that homeowners can’t anymore.
Free quote and roof check
We design your system based on your actual BGE / Pepco / Potomac Edison / Delmarva / SMECO / Choptank usage, roof orientation, and shade. No obligation.
Sign and we install
Our financing partner underwrites the system. We handle every permit, every inspection, and the install itself.
Pay one monthly amount
Once the system turns on, you pay one fixed monthly bill for the use of the system. That payment is contractually below what you’d pay your utility for the same power.
We handle the system for 25 years
Monitoring, maintenance, repairs, insurance — all included. If something breaks, our partner fixes it.

Why a Lease Makes More Sense in 2026
The Federal Tax Credit Changed. Lease Math Got Better.
The federal residential solar tax credit ended December 31, 2025. Homeowners who pay cash or take a solar loan in 2026 no longer get the 30% credit. But the commercial Investment Tax Credit (Section 48E) still applies to systems owned by a third party, which is exactly how a solar lease works. Our financing partner claims that credit and passes the savings through as a lower monthly rate to you.
For Maryland homeowners with limited federal tax liability, or who don’t want to wait until tax season to capture incentive value, this means a lease now delivers more of the federal incentive than ownership does. The system on your roof is still subsidized, just via a different path.
If you have the cash, or you live in Montgomery County and qualify for the Green Bank’s 0% solar loan, ownership might still win the long-run math. We’ll run those numbers honestly during your quote and tell you which way makes sense for your situation.
The Honest Tradeoffs
What a lease gives you
- $0 upfront cost
- Lower monthly cost than your current utility bill from day one
- Zero maintenance, monitoring, or repair responsibility for 25 years
- A locked-in electricity rate insulated from utility rate hikes
- No risk if equipment underperforms — that’s our financing partner’s problem
What a lease costs you
- You don’t own the system. The financing partner does.
- You don’t earn Maryland SREC income. The owner does. (15-year value typically $4,800-$10,800 for an 8 kW system.)
- You don’t claim the federal commercial tax credit directly. The owner does — but you benefit indirectly through lower payments.
- You don’t claim the Maryland Solar Access Program grant (up to $7,500 for eligible homeowners). The owner does.
- Long-term savings are lower than cash purchase or a loan, because part of every payment covers your financing partner’s capital and profit.

Is a Lease Right for You?
A lease is probably the right call if:
- You can’t use the federal commercial tax credit yourself (and the residential credit no longer exists)
- You don’t want to deal with system maintenance, monitoring, or repairs
- You plan to stay in your home for the foreseeable future
- You want predictable monthly costs without taking on debt
- You don’t qualify for Montgomery County Green Bank’s 0% solar loan
A lease probably isn’t the right call if:
- You have the cash to buy outright — ownership saves more over 25 years
- You qualify for Montgomery County Green Bank’s 0% solar loan (we’ll tell you straight — the loan likely wins)
- You’re income-eligible for the Maryland Solar Access Program ($750/kW grant up to $7,500) and have tax liability to use the federal commercial credit (you’d want ownership to claim these)
- You’re planning to sell your home within 3-5 years (lease transfers add friction at sale)
